New Year New Me, No Thanks

It’s that time of year again. January, the start to a new year. The time when everyone has high hopes for what the new year will bring and they set new year’s resolutions. It won’t take much for this year to surpass the hot mess we call 2020.

Last January I wrote about how I won’t be setting new year’s resolutions and why. You can read that here. Please understand I am not against new year’s resolutions. I think they are great actually. People use them to better themselves in areas they feel like they are lacking or to improve their health or further their careers. The reasons are endless. It’s awesome people want to do better for themselves. They’re just not for me.

My issue with new year’s resolutions is simply that people set them because it’s a thing most of us do. It’s the start of a new year. To start fresh. To improve your health. Further your career, Learn new things. Grow yourself. Whatever it is you want to accomplish. Waiting until the new year to start those things feels like an excuse. Why not set those goals/resolutions any time of the year? Is it because you have people to set them with and hold each other accountable? How often are those resolutions set because you feel like you have to?

THe holidays are right around the corner and I don’t want to miss out on all the food, baked goods, ect. You can be on a health journey and still indulge at the holidays. You’re allowed to have cheat days and not deprive yourself of the foods you enjoy. I want to be a better person, but January is just a few weeks away, so I’ll just wait. Why not start now? You are constantly evolving, growing, learning, and bettering yourself. Why wait to start trying new ways, when you can start now? If you see a fault within yourself, you are the only one in charge of changing that. You can start any time. I want to start working out and get in shape, but I don’t have time with the holidays. You always have time, if you make time. If there’s a will, there’s a way.

Maybe I just think different, I don’t know. When I set goals or resolutions or whatever you want to call them, I do them differently. I set my big yearly goals on my birthday. That’s the start of a new year for me. No pressure to start them, no one even knows I started them, which actually makes me push myself harder to do everything I can to meet them. I think if you set a goal, resolution, whatever for yourself, you should start do accomplish it immediately. It shouldn’t be something that’s set at a specific time just because it’s a new year. If you want to accomplish something, decide and go for it.

Like I said, I have nothing against new year’s resolutions. I guess I just don’t get the hype. If you want to change something, get healthier, improve yourself, or anything else, you shouldn’t wait for a specific day to do it. You should just go for it. Make those changes. Crush those goals. And always better yourself for you and no one else. Get healthier for you. Change yourself for you. Improve yourself for you. If you are one to set new year’s resolutions, kudos to you. I hope they go well, you stick with them, and you destroy them to become the best you that you can be.
