I don’t know what I expected Halloween this year to be like. I didn’t really expect much or even think about it really. You just think of the usual – getting the kids in costumes, visiting family, and eating before going trick -or-treating. This year Halloween was different though.
The day started off like any other. I got myself ready and got my daughter ready in her costume. She saw Birds of Prey recently and wanted to be Harley Quinn. Of course I said yes, except we needed an outfit idea because I wasn’t about to let her wear the famous Harley Quinn outfit. So we had decided on a crazier unmatched outfit like one she wears in Birds of Prey. I took a simple route and was Waldo from the Where’s Waldo books. My son decided he wanted to dress up and had an idea for face paint, but didn’t like the way it looked so he washed it off.
My son did end up staying home and not going trick-or-treating this year. It was the first year he hasn’t gone in 14 years. Bittersweet moment, but he had fun handing out candy. While he stayed home my husband and I took our daughter trick-or-treating. We stayed in our neighborhood. There were houses with no candy signs. Houses warning of illnesses in the house. Candy bowls on front porches or prepacked goody bags for the kids to grab. Hand sanitizer on porches for anyone that wanted to use it. Some people were wearing masks, some wearing gloves. A few houses even had various candy delivery systems set up so they didn’t have to come into contact with anyone. My daughter did a good job keeping her distance from other trick-or-treaters.
Our neighborhood usually fills her bucket and this year was the same. It’s kind of nice so we don’t have to drive around anywhere. When we finished we went to our neighbors Halloween party. Our neighbors are the type of neighbors that adopt your whole family into theirs and they go all out for every holiday. Halloween is no different. Their house is covered in decorations and so is their backyard. Food and goodies for days and some of the most amazing people you will ever meet. We had a lot of fun and I even got to get my picture taken with Darth Vader. For those that know me personally know I’m a huge Star Wars nerd, so it totally made my night.
It was a very good Halloween. We did the best we could under the circumstances to keep things as normal as possible for our kids because this year has been so weird. They’ve been through enough already, normalcy is good. The masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and candy delivery systems were all new. My daughter didn’t seem to think much of it, but it was weird. Our neighborhood definitely showed up for the kids this year and that was great to see. Halloween was different this year, but it was a success.
